The Sparta Spartans began the Ryan Patterson era on the road Thursday, travelling to Wyoming to face the Wolves. It was a successful initial journey, as they secured a 28-0 road victory.

In the first quarter, Sparta struck first on an electric jet sweep. Charlie Alt took the sweep 63 yards to the end zone, giving the Spartans a 7-0 edge. This was the only score of the frame.

Sparta added three touchdowns in the second quarter, giving them their entire 28-0 margin of victory. The first two scores came on short touchdown runs from Derek Dyer, as he bowled over Wolves defenders for runs of 1 and 3 yards. Finally, Warren Gebhardt connected with Alt on a 27-yard bubble screen to push the lead to 28.

Carter Degraaf was a perfect 4/4 on field goal kicks, giving the Spartans a reliable option on special teams.

The Spartans, 1-0 for the second straight season, will look to move to 2-0 for the first time since 2019 when they face Wayland next Friday. Wyoming will look to snap their seven-game skid against Homer, a Class C team that went 1-8 last season but already is 1-0 in 2025 after defeating Comstock 34-8.
