The Grand Rapids Catholic Central Cougars had one of their more frustrating regular seasons in recent memory. At 5-4, the program posted their most regular season losses since 2009. With their 17th straight postseason trip opening up Friday against Hopkins, they looked to keep their streak of advancing to at least the District Finals in every season since 2015 alive.

On the opening drive, Grand Rapids Catholic Central gave their fans something exciting to cheer about. The Cougars covered 90 yards in 10 plays, with Kamal Hillard breaking off a 23-yard touchdown run to give them a 7-0 advantage.

Hopkins looked to shorten this game by embarking on lengthy offensive drives, leaning into their ground game. They had success in the opening possession, as they took fourteen plays to cover 64 yards, reaching the GRCC one yard line. Ultimately, the Cougars’ defense took a stand, holding them out of the end zone. This was the Vikings’ best chance at scoring, as they would put up just 47 yards the remainder of the night.

In the final minute of the first half, Odin Spencer found Jami Williams for a 9-yard touchdown pass. Williams would end up with seven catches for 93 yards, passing his brother Jace Williams for the program record for career receptions in the process.

After no scoring plays in the third quarter, Odin Spencer used his legs to get the Cougars further ahead. His 5-yard quarterback keeper on the opening play of the fourth quarter extended the lead to 21. Finally, freshman Timmy Clarey scored the Cougars’ last touchdown, a 1-yard carry.

With this victory, Grand Rapids Catholic Central advances to the District Finals, where they will look to capture their ninth consecutive trophy. Standing in their way is longtime rival West Catholic, who defeated Oakridge 32-14.
