Last week, the South Christian Sailors fell short in a shootout with Wayland. This victory allowed the Wildcats to secure a playoff berth, which ironically meant that they would face South Christian for a second week in a row. As is the case in many playoff rematches of similarly-matched teams, it proved hard to beat the same team twice. South Christian flexed its muscle in a 34-7 victory.
After forcing a turnover on downs, Wayland took over at their own 25 yard line midway through the first quarter. Just two plays later, the Wildcats were standing in the end zone. Cameron Bogart darted through the Sailors defense for a 74-yard touchdown run, giving them an early 7-0 lead.
South Christian would respond on the ensuing drive, completing a seven minute touchdown march. With about 10 minutes left in the half, Carson Vis paired up with Jake Vermaas on a 5-yard toss. An extra point by Drew Bruinsma evened the score at 7. Before the half concluded, Vis used his legs on an 8-yard keeper. This gave the Sailors a 14-7 lead heading into the locker room.
In the third quarter, scoring was limited. Carson Vis was able to provide the theatrics again, breaking free on a 24-yard scamper. Ahead 21-7 with a quarter to play, the Sailors used the final twelve minutes to provide some insurance points.
Vis and Vermaas connected on their second score, a 35-yard toss. Finally, Charlie Scrheur put the cap on the final score with a 9-yard touchdown rush.
Carson Vis finished 11/16 passing in this game, tallying 188 yards and two scores. Jake Vermaas hauled in six of those completions for 129 yards and both touchdowns. On the ground, Vis added a team high 96 yards rushing on 15 carries.
With this victory, the Sailors are back in the District Finals. They will have their second straight league rematch with a showdown against Forest Hills Eastern. FHE defeated Ionia 27-0 to set up a replay of the Week 4 contest. In that league game, South Christian escaped with a 32-29 victory.
