The South Christian Sailors were back in action on Friday night, hosting conference foe Cedar Springs. It was more of the same for the Sailors, as their high-powered offense flexed its muscle on the way to a 45-23 victory.
On their opening drive, the Sailors found the end zone. Carson Vis connected with Noah Funl for a 67-yard touchdown strike. Cedar Springs would respond with their own scoring drive. Dylan Lafontsee found a seam in the South Christian defense and shot 44 yards up the middle for a touchdown.
South Christian took the lead back before the end of the first quarter when Jackson Haik ripped off a 52-yard touchdown run.
Ahead 14-7, the Sailors got a 24-yard field goal from Nick Logan to start the second quarter. On their next drive, Carson Vis used his legs for a 2-yard quarterback keeper. With 7 minutes to play before halftime, the Sailors were ahead 24-7.
Cedar Springs would get a rare touchdown pass when Bryce Luevano found Nate Robinson on a 5-yard toss. This would be their last score of the half, but South Christian would respond. On the ensuing kickoff, Jackson Haik housed the kickoff to give South Christian a 31-15 halftime lead.
The initial march of the third quarter saw the Sailors strike again. Vis found Jake Vermaas for a 15-yard touchdown. Cedar Springs would not quit, responding with a 32-yard touchdown run by Marek Oleneak.
Ahead 38-23 heading into the final frame, South Christian had one insurance touchdown up their sleeve. Vis wrapped up his night with a 2-yard touchdown carry to push the game to its final 22-point margin.
Carson Vis finished this game 11/13 passing for 222 yards and 2 scores. He added 22 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Jake Vermaas paced the Sailors’ receivers with 98 yards on 5 catches, while Jackson Haik added 94 rushing yards.
In defeat, Cedar Springs was led by Dylan Lafontsee, who turned 21 carries into 138 yards. Marek Oleneak added 74 yards on 13 carries.
South Christian is now 5-1 on the season and 4-0 in league play. Next week, the Sailors will face off with Middleville. Cedar Springs slides to 2-4 on the season and 2-2 in OK Gold play. The ‘Hawks have a must-win game next week against Ottawa Hills.
