For the first time since the 2017 season, the Zeeland East Chix have started the season at 3-0. After missing the playoffs last season, East has made it clear that they have big things on their mind this season. By outscoring opponents the first three weeks of the season, 147-78, the offense has been putting up high numbers on a weekly basis. This week, the defense would put together their best outing of the season.
Things couldn’t have started any better for the Chix on this night. Tyler Loeb would get the night started with some fireworks as he took the opening kickoff back for 80-yards. This gave East an early 7-0 advantage. Quarterback Austin Keur would make his way in from 16-yards away later on in the quarter. This gave the Chix a 15-0 lead after a good two-point try and that’s where things would stand after one.
Just minutes into the second quarter Keur would find Teagan Slenk from 20-yards away to give East all the momentum. This would make it a 23-0 game with much of the half still intact. A 1-yard touchdown run by Eli Walcott later in the quarter would make it a 31-0 Chix lead. They weren’t done yet. East would find the endzone again in the half with just seconds remaining. Loeb would punch in a 1-yard run to give the Chix a 38-0 lead at the half.
Zeeland East came out of the half as the same team. Gabe Amid would reach the endzone on a 12-yard run. This made it a 45-0 game after a good PAT try from Dylan Killilea.
They would get the pass game going early in the final quarter when Freshman quarterback Will Drnek found Evan Schuberg from 16-yards away. The Killilea PAT would make it a 52-0 game. Wyoming would finally be able to put some points on the board late when Quinton-Lee Clark Dickens found space from 18-yards. It would cut the lead to 52-8 but it just wasn’t going to be in the cards for the Wolves tonight. East would find the endzone would last time as Caden Arendsen took one in from 21-yards out. All Zeeland East on the night, they go on to take this one 59-8.
Wyoming will move to 0-4 on the season as they will look to rebound next week when they take on Grand Rapids Union. It should be a good battle for the Wolves as they look for their first win on the year. The Red Hawks fell to Zeeland West, 7-48 in week four.
It was another dominant performance from Zeeland East as they put together their best week overall on the season. They will be in for a true test next week, however, when they take on rival Zeeland West. The Dux roll in at 4-0 and have dominated East the past four seasons. Expect that one to be very close and one of the games to watch in Michigan next Friday night.
