The Hudsonville Eagles began their 2023 season at home on Thursday night, welcoming Howell to town. From the opening kick, Hudsonville’s defense was ready to roll. Howell’s offense was unable to score on Thursday, managing a mere safety in a 28-2 defeat.
Halfway through the opening frame, Hudsonville found the end zone for the first time. Bryce Fox was able to power across the goal line from four yards out, giving the Eagles an early 7-0 lead. Howell would respond with their defense, forcing an errant punt snap through the back of the end zone for a Highlanders’ safety. The score remained 7-2 after the opening frame came to an end.
From that point forward, it was all Hudsonville. They added to their lead with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Griffin Baker to Cash Tenmaye. Just before the half, Baker and Jack Wills paired up on a 25-yard touchdown strike. This scoring play was set up by a tremendous run from Bryce Fox.
Ahead 21-7 at halftime, Hudsonville would add one more touchdown in the third frame. Griffin Baker completed the hat trick with his third touchdown toss. This 8-yard ball was hauled in by Cole Williams.
With the win, Hudsonville starts the year 1-0 for the first time since 2020. They will look to build on that start in Week 2, as they square off with the East Lansing Trojans.
