The girls basketball season began its second week on Monday. Below are the scores around the area, as well as some of the highlights from around our coverage zone.

MONDAY DECEMBER 6

Lawrence 35 Fennville 23: The Blackhawks suffered a loss to Lawrence on Monday. It was a slow first quarter that saw the game knotted up at 4. Lawrence got a two-point lead heading into halftime, before a strong third quarter gave them a bigger advantage. Fennville struggled at the free throw line, shooting 1/9 in defeat. Lila Rosema led Fennville with 8 points, while Christina Mendoza and Madisynn Jefferson each chipped in 4.

White Cloud 43 Mason County Eastern 14: The Indians pulled away from the Cardinals in Monday’s non-league showdown. It was 10-6 White Cloud after the first quarter, before MCE committed a plethora of turnovers. This allowed the Indians to hold MCE to just 8 points in three quarters, including one in the second quarter. Hillary Howe led MCE with 7 points.

 

TUESDAY DECEMBER 7

Allendale 27 Hopkins 19: The Falcons improve to 2-0 with a victory over rival Hopkins. Defense was the name of the game in this contest, as Allendale pitched a shutout in the third quarter. In the second quarter, Allendale scored 13, nearly half of their points. Hannah Schroeder paced the Falcons with 11 points. Sami Harris chipped in 6. Madi Weber was the leading scorer for Hopkins with 11.

Byron Center 61 Jenison 42: The Bulldogs took down the Wildcats in a non-league battle on Tuesday. It was all even at 13 after the first quarter, before Jenison took a two-point lead into the locker room. After halftime, Coach Slot’s BC team outscored Jenison 33-12 on their way to victory. Lily Zeinstra paced the ‘Dawgs with 22 points, while McKenna Ferguson chipped in 18. Jenison was led by Terin Maynard (22) and Ella Haik (11).

Hart 52 Western Michigan Christian 36: The Pirates secured a non-league victory over WMC on Tuesday. Relying on team defense and balanced offense, Hart expanded their lead in each quarter. Though they were undersized, Hart held WMC to just one offensive board. Jayd Hovey led Hart with 17 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists. Aspen Boutell added 8 points, while Mariana VanAgtmael chipped in 7 points and 4 steals. Addi Hovey padded the stat sheet with 5 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals and 3 assists.

Kent City 68 Grant 29: The Eagles jumped out to a 44-8 halftime lead on their way to a commanding victory against the Tigers. Lexie Bowers led the way with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 7 steals and 6 assists. Madelyn Geers added 15 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Emmalyn Geers had 12 points as the third Kent City player in double figures.

Lawton 54 Dowagiac 27: The Blue Devils improved to 2-0 by doubling up Dowagiac. It paired smothering defense with a balanced offensive attack. Reese Olson led Lawton with 14 points and 6 steals. Sarah DeKoning added 10 points and 5 rebounds. Addie Price, Ella Richter and Gabriella High all chipped in 6 points, while High had 5 steals.

Martin 51 Galesburg-Augusta 33: The Clippers improved to 2-1 on the season with an 18-point win over the Rams. Missing two key players, Martin had just seven available girls, including a JV call-up. Makala Goddard hit five threes to break the G-A zone with 15 points. Gracie Shettler led the team with 18 points. Maddy Bodgan added 9 points with some aggressive scoring attacks, while Lynsey Jager crashed the offensive glass.

Newaygo 50 Whitehall 25: The Lions improve to 2-0 on the season after doubling up Whitehall. The Lions led 27-10 at half and gradually pulled away from the Vikings. “Happy with the victory tonight. Whitehall is a tough physical team and really made us earn everything we got,” Newaygo Head Coach Nate Thomasma shared. “We shot the ball well which helped on offense, and our bench stepped up when we had starters in foul trouble.” Jaxi Long led Newaygo with 24 points on six made three-pointers, to go along with 5 steals and 4 rebounds. Emmerson Goodin added 13 points, 10 rebounds and 5 steals. A trio of Whitehall Vikings finished with team-high five-point outputs.

North Muskegon 40 Muskegon Catholic Central 27: The Crusaders suffered a non-league loss to North Muskegon on Tuesday. It was six points after the first quarter, before their deficit expanded. MCC was led by Grace Staniforth with 10 points, while Claire LaVigne added 9.

Shelby 53 Fremont 41: The Tigers improve to 2-1 on the season with a road victory over the Packers. Shelby led 14-4 after the first quarter, and they expanded that lead to 18 points at the break. Fremont was cold in the first half, shooting 4/34 in the first sixteen minutes. The Packers would rally to within 8 points with three minutes to go, but could not draw closer. Kendall Zoulek led Shelby with 18, while Molli Schultz (15) and Ella Olmstead (13) chipped in double digit performances. Both Zoulek and Lauren Brown finished with 10 rebounds for the Tigers. Haley Zerlaut led Fremont with 21 points and 4 steals.

Spring Lake 42 Montague 41: The Lakers held off the Wildcats in a thriller on the Lakeshore. Both teams hit crucial late baskets, including Ella Andree’s go-ahead layup with twelve seconds left, before Montague’s game-winning attempt was unsuccessful. Montague led by 10 early in the fourth quarter, and six with four minutes to play, but they committed some crucial turnovers in crunch time that allowed Spring Lake to end the game on a 17-4 run. Maddie Meacham led the ‘Gue with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Claire Meacham added 7 points and 12 rebounds. Emma Dyer had 8 points as well. Jennifer Judge and Brooke Bolthouse each led Spring Lake with 11 points, while Andree added 10. Meah Bajt had 2 points, 3 assists, 4 steals and 6 rebounds.

Tri County 53 Holton 34

Tri-Unity Christian 47 Orchard View 33: The Cardinals were defeated by Orchard View on Tuesday evening. Tri-Unity got out to a 12-4 lead, and they never looked back. Hikari Katsuzawa led OV with 11 points, while Liz Estelle added 10 points and 8 rebounds.

West Michigan Lutheran 35 Barry County Christian 20: The David Miller era got off to a roaring start, as the Mustangs went to Hastings and came out with a victory. A hot start sparked WML as they outscored BCC 10-2 in the opening eight minutes. Over the last three quarters, they continued to grow their lead. Carlie Toering led the Mustangs with 18 points, while Brekkon Godbold joined her in double digits with 10. Kathryn Koetje paced BCC with 17 of their 20 points.
