The Montague Wildcats captured at least a share of the WMC title on Friday night, as they rolled to a 70-0 victory against the Shelby Tigers.
Montague scored four times in the opening quarter. Andrew Kooi took to the air for the Wildcats’ first score, pairing up with Reece Taylor on a 15-yard toss. The Montague defense stepped up next, as Colton Blankstrom stepped in front of a pass and raced 30 yards to the end zone. Dylan Everett joined the scoring column with a 15-yard run, and Blankstrom and Kooi capped off the first quarter scoring with a 40-yard touchdown toss.
Already ahead by twenty-six, the Wildcats added two more points to their tally with a safety by John Greiner. On the ensuing free kick, Adam Baird fielded the football and raced 98 yards through the oncoming tacklers for a score. Dylan Everett’s second touchdown of the game, a 43-yard sprint, gave Montague a 42-0 lead.
The Wildcats had two more touchdowns in the second quarter. First, Andrew Kooi used his legs for a 5-yard keeper. Finally, Adam Baird stepped in front of a pass and returned it to the end zone, giving Montague a commanding 56-0 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, with the running clock in effect, possessions were limited. Montague still managed to find the end zone twice. Adam Baird’s third touchdown of the night came in the third different way. This time, it was a 4-yard carry. Michael Moore finished the scoring with a 37-yard run for Montague.
Montague outgained Shelby 329-43 in this game. Andrew Kooi led the passing attack with 95 yards on 3/4 completions. Dylan Everett added 99 rushing yards on 7 carries. Adam Baird finished with 69 yards on five carries.
The Wildcats are now 5-1 after this win over Shelby. Next week, Montague will face Mason County Central. Shelby, now 0-6, will take on Whitehall in their next attempt to snap their 14-game skid.
