The Coopersville offense entered Friday night averaging 37.7 points per game. In their contest against Holland Christian, it would be their defense that proved to be the difference maker. It was a real defensive showdown, with just two scoring plays and one rain delay. In the end, the Broncos’ touchdown was more than the Maroons’ field goal, and Coopersville escaped with a 7-3 victory.
Neither team scored in the first quarter, and the second quarter was also nearly scoreless. With just seven seconds to play in the second quarter, Adam Bergman got the Maroons on the scoreboard. He booted a 47-yard field goal, a kick that is the second longest in Holland Christian history. It gave the team a 3-0 lead entering the locker room.
In the third quarter, Coopersville put together a scoring drive. They marched down the field, and with 6:30 to play, they crossed the goal line. Wes Near powered into the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown. An extra point by Cayden Rathka game the Broncos a 7-3 advantage.
At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the rain started to pour. It ultimately led to a thirty-minute delay of the game. When play resumed, neither team was able to break off a scoring play. This left the score at 7-3 in favor of the Broncos.
At 4-0 (2-0 OK Blue), Coopersville is tied atop the OK Blue. They will look to win their fifth straight to open 2021 when they square off with Allendale. Holland Christian is now 1-3 after this defeat, and they hold an 0-2 OK Blue record. They will look for their first conference victory next week, when the Maroons face Unity Christian.
