The Spring Lake Lakers made a statement when they began their 2021 season last week against Zeeland East. This week, they continued to flash their offensive prowess in a 47-12 victory against the Maroons of Holland Christian.
After starting with the football, the Maroons resorted to trickery to take an early lead. Reeves Taylor pitched the football to Julius Dykhuis, who tossed it to an open Jordan Duncan for a 19-yard touchdown, giving Holland Christian a 6-0 lead.
Spring Lake would respond back with a pair of rushing touchdowns to take the lead. Ty French bowled across the goal line from two yards out to give the Lakers a 7-6 lead, and Christian Folkert‘s 5-yard run put the Lakers ahead by eight.
In the second quarter, Holland Christian answered with another touchdown. Jordan Duncan hauled in his second touchdown, this time directly from Reeves Taylor. A failed two-point try left the Maroons down by two points.
The Lakers responded with two touchdowns to push the lead out at halftime. Andrew Vonwahlde reeled off a 10-yard run to extend the lead to eight points. Jackson Core would toss the other touchdown, as he found Christian Folkert for a 19-yard touchdown pass. Another failed conversion left the count 26-12 Lakers at the break.
In the second half, Spring Lake outscored Holland Christian 21-0 to ice the victory. First, Christian Folkert broke off a 33-yard rushing touchdown. Next, Dylan Lisman chipped in a 3-yard rushing score. Finally, the scoring concluded late in the third quarter as Folkert scored from 13 yards out.
Jackson Core was effective passing for the Lakers, as he was 7/9 for 145 yards and a touchdown. Christian Folkert paced the rushing attack with 145 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns on 13 carries. Brody Lightfoot added 69 rushing yards, while Andrew Vonwahlde added 42. Joel Westhoff led Spring Lake with 48 receiving yards.
Reeves Taylor finished 15/30 for Holland Christian, throwing for 114 yards. Will Alderink was contained for the first time this year, as the star tailback was held to only 31 yards rushing. Jordan Duncan led Holland Christian with 52 yards receiving.
Next week, the Maroons (1-2) will take on Coopersville. Spring Lake (2-0) will square off against rival Fruitport.
