The Derek Pennington era has gotten off to an electric start at Caledonia. After taking down Holt last Thursday, Caledonia returned home for a non-conference matchup against Lowell. There were just as many fireworks for the Fighting Scots in this game, as they pitched a 35-0 shutout against the Red Arrows.
Caledonia started with the football, and the big plays started almost immediately. Just over a minute into the game, Mason McKenzie fired a bubble screen to Nick Fox. Fox sprung free, and he reeled off a 67-yard touchdown catch. McKenzie would use his legs near the end of the first quarter to push Caledonia’s advantage to fourteen points.
Blake Herron announced his offensive presence with his first touchdown of the 2021 campaign. In the opening plays of the second quarter, he powered through for an 11-yard score. The Fighting Scots would take their 20-0 lead into the locker room.
After a scoreless third quarter, Caledonia’s offense returned to life in the fourth quarter. McKenzie and Fox paired up for a score once again, as their 4-yard touchdown connection capped off a remarkable touchdown march. This scoring drive went 77 yards, and it consumed six minutes of clock, a classic Caledonia football drive.
McKenzie would round out the scoring in the fourth quarter with his fourth touchdown of the evening, his second on the ground. His 40-yard touchdown run moved the score to its final tally, 35-0.
This was a remarkable display of football by the Fighting Scots, as they now have two consecutive wins against Lowell after just two total wins in nine meetings dating back to 1991. This is the first time Lowell has been shutout by Caledonia since 2014, when the Fighting Scots stunned the Red Arrows 33-0 at Ralph E Meyers Memorial Stadium on their way to an OK White championship.
Next week, Caledonia will begin OK Red play with a home game against Grandville. Lowell, who is now 0-2 for the first time since their 1-8 campaign in 2018, will look for their first victory next Friday. The Red Arrows will hit the road to take on Forest Hills Northern in their OK White opener.
