The Muskegon Big Reds are annually one of the area’s best teams. It appears that they will be on that track once again this fall, if their Week 1 performance has indication of their season. They cruised tonight to a 47-7 victory over the East Kentwood Falcons.
Muskegon got on the board first with a 72-yard touchdown drive. Myles Walton was able to put the Big Reds on the board with a 3-yard touchdown plunge just four minutes into the game. After forcing a punt attempt, East Kentwood’s punter botched the snap, setting the Big Reds up with stellar field position. Two plays later, Destin Piggee ran in a 9-yard touchdown to extend Muskegon’s lead to thirteen points just six minutes into the game.
The Muskegon lead continued to climb rapidly, in large part thanks to East Kentwood miscues. The Falcons fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and the Big Reds recovered. Myles Walton wasted no time in scoring on a 30-yard touchdown run to give Muskegon a 20-0 lead. One more touchdown was scored by Muskegon in the first quarter, as Walton and Jeremiah Dault paired up for a 20-yard pass.
Myles Walton continued to provide highlight reel plays, showing his explosive ability in the second quarter. He broke free on a 93-yard sprint in which he evaded East Kentwood tacklers and ran free into the end zone. The Big Reds would take the 34-0 lead into the half.
In the third quarter, it took just three plays for Muskegon to score. Jakob Price was off to the races, outlasting East Kentwood’s defenders for a 64-yard touchdown. The running clock went into effect at this point, limiting possessions on both sides. Casey Joppie led a fourth quarter touchdown drive for East Kentwood, as he found Reginald Brown for a 14-yard touchdown. Jakob Price would conclude the scoring with a 92-yard sprint downfield.
East Kentwood and Muskegon both will take on Eastside powerhouse programs next week. The Falcons will travel to Brother Rice on Friday, while Muskegon will welcome the Cass Tech Technicians.
