A week after a tough loss to Ludington, Coopersville aimed to get back in the win column against West Catholic. The Falcons were also seeking revenge after a tough loss to Northview in their season opener. West Catholic has long been a thorn in Coopersville’s side, with victories in five straight seasons and victories in 13 of the 14 meetings since West Catholic left the City League at the end of 2007. This Friday, it was more dominance in this series by West. The Falcons cruised to a 34-0 victory, sending Coopersville to their first 0-2 start since 2020.
Neither team scored in the first quarter of play, but West Catholic struck thrice in the second frame. First, it was Owen Hunter hauling in a 30-yard touchdown pass from Grady Augustyn. On the next drive, Augustyn and Thomas Puksta linked up for an 18-yard toss. That duo would connect once more before the half with a 10-yard touchdown connection, giving the Falcons a 21-0 halftime lead.
After a scoreless third quarter, Collin Abram broke the drought with a 1-yard touchdown plunge for West Catholic. Julian Kado rounded out the scoring with a 10-yard touchdown carry with just over two minutes to play, the first varsity touchdown of the junior’s career.
Next week, West Catholic (1-1) will take on South Christian. Coopersville will look to stop their slide against Lowell in their River Cities opener.
