On September 21,1979, South Christian took down Forest Hills Central 20-14 in and OK White clash. For the next 45 seasons, these two schools, separated in distance by just under 14 miles, had not met once on the gridiron. The new conference realignment made it a potentially annual occurrence, giving fans in West Michigan a great series to look forward to. This first rendition saw Forest Hills Central take out their 45-year revenge, securing a 34-13 win over the Sailors.
South Christian struck first in this game with a 1-yard touchdown run by Carson Vis. This would be the only Sailors’ lead of the night, as the Rangers scored an equalizer four minutes later. Nick Williams aired it out, pairing up with Brendan Cargill on a 15-yard touchdown toss.
The second quarter saw Williams throw the ball quickly, finding the end zone on two separate occasions. First, after an interception by Piotowski, Williams and Ryan linked up on a first-play 34-yard touchdown. Later, before half, Justin tossed another ball to Cargill, who hauled it in to give FHC a 20-6 locker room lead.
Things did not improve for FHC, as they yielded two additional passing touchdowns. Carson Vis did find his way back to the end zone on another short keeper.
Nick Williams was magnificent in this game for FHC. He had 11 carries for 50 yards, but his presence was felt more in the Rangers’ aerial attack. Williams finished with 263 yards through the air, as well as all five touchdowns.
Two scores went to Brendan Cargill, who had six receptions for 160 yards. Max Holser had 70 yards recieving and two touchdowns to go along with 8 tackles. Ty Ryan rounded out the aerial scoring with a touchdown catch paired with an interception.
South Christian, now 4-1 on the season, returns to OK Gold action against Zeeland East on Friday. Forest Hills Central, also 4-1, will continue their tough stretch against Zeeland West.
