The Coyotes of Reed City took on the Newaygo Lions for a CSAA clash that pitted the old guard against the rising stars. It saw an immense number of scoring plays, giving Reed City a comfortable 63-37 victory.
In the first quarter, Newaygo held a slight edge. With their first 4-0 record since 1997, the Lions scored 14 points in the opening quarter. The first touchdown came on a Trevor Garbrecht from two yards out, while Newaygo also benefitted from an 84-yard touchdown toss. Sandwiched in between was a Kent City score on Jack Deitsch‘s 4-yard touchdown carry, leaving the Lions ahead by 7.
Reed City seized the lead early in the second quarter with a pair of scoring plays. Though both touchdowns came on the ground, they were scored by different Coyotes’ ball carriers. First, Deitsch reeled off a 74-yard sprint to paydirt. Secondly, Kason Coppick converted a medium-length touchdown, a 14-yard carry. The teams would go on to exchange chores the rest of the third quarter, leaving Kent City in front 41-21 at halftime.
Throughout the second half, the teams mirrored themselves offensively. Reed City, who entered with the advantage after the first half, proceeded to extend upon that advantage by scoring thrice compared to Newaygo’s pair of touchdowns.
Next week, the Lions will look to secure win #5 when they face Chippewa Hills. Reed City, now 4-1, will play Pontiac Notre Dame Prep.
