South Christian was able to remain unbeaten in OK Gold action with a 49-0 rout of the Ottawa Hills Bengals. The Sailors scored 42 points before halftime, and the final seven on the opening drive of the second half.
Charlie Schreur got things started with a 22-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter. This touchdown was set up by a muffed Ottawa Hills punt that allowed the Sailors to have prime field position at the Ottawa Hills 35 yard line. Later in the first quarter, Carson Vis and Jake Vermaas connected for a 25-yard touchdown strike. After one quarter of play, it was 14-0 South Christian.
In the second frame, Tyler Brinks stepped up to make a play on the defensive side. He stepped in front of a Bengals pass and raced 40 yards to the end zone. After another muffed punt put South Christian in great field position, Vis and Vermaas paired up once more. This time, it was a short 9-yard strike that put South ahead by 28. The Sailors were not done there, as the Vis-Vermaas tandem had another 10-yard touchdown connection. Finally, after stopping Ottawa Hills on a fourth down attempt, South Christian had just 27 yards to go to find the end zone. Jackson Haik capped off the short march with an 8-yard carry, giving South Christian a 42-0 halftime lead.
After the break, sophomore quarterback Kayd Coffman entered the game for South Christian. He was able to air it out, leading a 63-yard touchdown march. His scoring connection was with senior Noah Funk, as the duo created an 18-yard touchdown play. With the running clock in effect and a 49-point lead on the scoreboard, neither team would find the end zone for the remaining 20 minutes of action.
Carson Vis was 6/10 passing in this game for 87 yards and three scores. Jake Vermaas had four of those catches for 85 yards and the three touchdowns. Charlie Schreur had 43 yards rushing on 4 carries, while Jackson Haik added 64 rushing yards on 5 carries. Ottawa Hills had just 125 yards of offense in this game. In fact, yards were far and few between, as South Christian tallied just 226 despite scoring 49 points.
Next week, the Sailors (4-1, 3-0 OK Gold) will take on Cedar Springs. Ottawa Hills (0-5, 0-3 OK Gold) will look for their first victory against Middleville. The Trojans also enter that contest looking for their maiden victory of the 2023 campaign.
