The South Christian Sailors delivered a statement victory last week against Grand Rapids Catholic Central. This week, they had to remain focused on the task at hand as they welcomed Wayland to town for an OK showdown. At 4-2, Wayland has been a surprise to many this fall. The Wildcats pushed South Christian to the brink in this game, falling 21-14.
Neither team could find the end zone in the first quarter of play. Four minutes into the second frame, the Sailors struck. Jake DeHaan paired up with Carson Vis for a 3-yard touchdown toss. Nate Brinks‘ extra point gave South Christian a 7-0 lead.
With just three seconds remaining in the first half, Wayland found the equalizer. Maverick Daley took a handoff and bowled his way into the end zone from a yard out. Nate Winchel‘s extra point sent these teams to halftime in a deadlock.
Just four minutes remained in the third quarter when the end zone saw its next guest. Dustin Loomans, the signal-caller for Wayland, kept the football. His 1-yard power run across the goal line gave the Wildcats a stunning seven-point edge.
South Christian would quickly respond back with a touchdown march. DeHaan kept the football for the tying score, a 12-yard scamper. After a quick stop on defense, South Christian found the end zone once again. DeHaan would score the game-winner on the final play of the third quarter, when he broke free for a 43-yard touchdown.
It was another strong day for Jake DeHaan on Friday night. He was 9/16 passing for 102 yards and the score. He added 135 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. Maverick Daley paced the Wayland offensive attack with 144 rushing yards on 28 carries.
With this defeat, Wayland slides to 4-3. Next week, they will take on Grand Rapids Catholic Central. South Christian, now 7-0, will look to remain perfect against Kenowa Hills.
