The Montague Wildcats entered Saturday’s Division 6 regional finals with an unblemished 9-0 record. They had outscored their opponents 444-70 with one game decided by closer than 28 points. It had been absolute dominance for Montague prior to the postponement of the playoffs. After their win against Montrose on Saturday, it appears that they will pick up right where they left off.
Montague scored forty-one points in the first half, including thirty-three in the second quarter alone. With the running clock in effect for most of the second half, only Montrose found the end zone. The Rams scored sixteen fourth quarter points to lessen the final margin.
Drew Collins was phenomenal in this game for Montague. The quarterback completed all twelve of his pass attempts for a total of 228 yards and three touchdowns. He also added twenty-five rushing yards and another touchdown.
Tugg Nichols and Sam Smith were the primary targets for Collins. Nichols had three catches for ninety-eight yards and two touchdowns, while Smith caught five balls for seventy-seven yards and a touchdown.
Dylan Everett led the rushing attack with fifty-one yards on seven carries. Everett found the end zone twice, as Montague rushed for 155 yards as a team. Rodney Brassfield led the defense with nine tackles and two were tackles for loss. Izac Jarka had three interceptions for Montague.
Next week, the Wildcats will host the State Semifinals in Division 6. They will welcome Grayling to town for a shot at Ford Field. The Vikings are 7-3 on the season, as they beat Negaunee 56-26 to claim their first Regional Championship in program history.
