The Grandville Bulldogs entered Friday night atop the OK Red, with a one-game advantage in the win column over Rockford. As Caledonia came into town, the Fighting Scots were looking to play spoiler, as they did a year ago. On this Friday night however, Grandville came ready to play, delivering a plethora of knockout punches on their way to a 42-7 victory.
On their opening drive of the game, Grandville marched the length of the field and got into the end zone. Zac VanderWest capped off that drive with a one yard run, giving the Bulldogs 8-0. The Fighting Scots responded with a march down the field to the Grandville 20 yard line, but they were ultimately stopped on downs.
Grandville built off that stop and found the end zone again. Ian Sanders passed to Drew Betteridge for thirty yards and a touchdown to extend the lead to fourteen. Caledonia would once again get inside the red zone, but the Grandville defense stopped them in their tracks, leaving it 14-0 after the first quarter of play.
The Bulldogs would find the end zone through the air for the second time early in the second quarter. Sanders and Tommy Gregwer paired up for an eighty-three yard touchdown pass that extended the lead to twenty points.
Marcel Love ran fifty-eight yards to the end zone later in the second quarter to move the score to 28-0. After a Dash Herrema interception, Grandville took back over at the one-yard line. On the second play of their drive, Cam Terry burst through the Caledonia defense, running ninety-nine yards unimpeded to the end zone. This final score of the first half put the game at 35-0, forcing the running clock into effect for the second half.
In the second half, Grandville extended their lead with a touchdown run of fifty-three yards by Carson Smith. Caledonia would finally break the scoreless drought with six minutes to go as Carson VanderHoff ran twelve yards for a touchdown, moving the game to its final 42-7 margin.
Grandville had 523 yards of offense, 120 through the air and 403 on the ground. Marcel Love led the way with 158 yards, while Cam Terry added 108.
Caledonia had 264 yards of offense, 182 of which came from Carson VanderHoff. The senior rushed for 180 yards on 19 carries, and he scored the lone touchdown of the evening. This earns him the honor of the OSKAR Scots Fighting Scot of the Game.
Next week, Grandville (5-0) will pursue a conference title against Rockford. Caledonia (1-4) will look to snap their losing streak when they take on East Kentwood. Both of these games will be broadcast LIVE on Michigan Sports Radio next Friday night.
