The Mendon Hornets travelled to Climax-Scotts to face the Panthers on Friday night. A 24-0 start propelled the visitors into a convincing 44-18 victory.
In the first quarter, Mendon scored twice. Luke Schinker found Jack McCaw on a 25-yard passing play. Evan Lukeman added the conversion. On their next drive, Schinker used his legs for a 2-yard touchdown keeper. McCaw would take his turn converting the two-point play.
With 10:45 left in the second, Mendon found the end zone again. Luke Schniker powered across the goal line from a yard out to put Mendon ahead 24-0. It was at this point that Climax-Scotts finally scored.
After a passing touchdown from Matrau to Matrau, Mendon answered. Jack McCaw returned to the end zone with a powerful three yard run. This pushed the Hornets back ahead 30-6 at halftime.
The second half saw each team trading touchdowns. Schniker and Lukeman were the benefactors for Mendon, with touchdown runs of 11 and 4 yards.
Next week, Mendon will face its toughest test of the playoffs, and perhaps the entire season. The Hornets will now face off against Colon, an undefeated crew. The Magi have outscored opponents 549-164 so far this year. In their playoff opener, they throttled Camden-Frontier 62-8.
