The Freeland Falcons, outside of their hiccup against Frankenmuth, have been one of the better teams in the coverage area this season. They showed that once again on Friday night, as they captured the King of the Mountain Trophy in a 36-13 win over Swan Valley.
In the opening frame, Freeland seized control. They got things rolling with a great opening drive. The touchdown march was capped off by Garrett Pistro, as the tailback found the end zone from 8 yards out. Swan Valley responded with aggression, as the Vikings went for it on fourth down deep in their own end. After an unsuccessful attempt, the Falcons capitalized. Jacob Kundinger plunged across the goal line from two yards out, giving Freeland a 14-0 lead after twelve minutes.
Swan Valley got on the scoreboard first in the second quarter. After recovering a fumble, Tyler Drain added to his hot play with a 4-yard touchdown run, his third of the year. On the ensuing kickoff, Evan Vasicek fielded the football and raced through the Vikings coverage team, racking up 95 yards on his way to the end zone. Drain would add a short 1-yard touchdown at the end of the half, trimming the deficit to seven, 20-13, at the break.
In the third and fourth quarter, Freeland scored twice to extend their final margin of victory. Evan Vasicek built off his earlier kickoff return with a 54-yard sprint to the end zone in the third quarter. Bryson Huckeby aired it out for the Falcons’ final score, finding Alex Duley on a 23-yard toss. Grant Bakos wrapped up the scoring by catching Huckeby’s two-point toss.
The Falcons, now 6-1 on the year, will conclude TVC-Central play against Birch Run next week. Swan Valley, 3-4 in 2021, will wrap up their league slate against Bay City John Glenn.
