The annual M-37 battle between Grant and Newaygo was cancelled last year due to COVID-19. Fans of both sides were chomping at the bit for the long-awaited rematch this Friday night. It was a close, defensive battle as the Tigers held out for a 12-7 victory.
Neither team would score in the first quarter of this game. Four minutes into the second frame, Newaygo found the end zone first. Grant Harkness found Remy Wells on a 13-yard touchdown pass, giving the Lions a 7-0 lead.
Grant would answer back late in the quarter, as Cohen Garrod scored on a 2-yard touchdown run. Their failed conversion left the Tigers behind by a point, 7-6, at halftime.
In the third quarter, Brady Jacobs used his legs to deliver the go-ahead score for Grant. His 3-yard quarterback keeper gave the Tigers a five-point lead. They would fail to convert the two-point try. Over the final seventeen minutes, they would keep Newaygo out of the end zone, sealing the victory.
With the win, Grant improves to 3-3 on the season. The Tigers will be back in action next week against Big Rapids. Newaygo (1-5) will take on Reed City next Friday.
