The Grand Valley Christian Patriots had a slight change of plans early this week, as they were originally set to host the Washtenaw Saints. A scheduling conflict left the Patriots without a home, and the club instead travelled to Washtenaw County for their Saturday afternoon ballgame. The drive home for Coach Brian Shafer’s team had to be a happy one, as the Patriots cruised to a 40-0 victory.
It was another phenomenal performance by Patriots’ quarterback Lex Underhill. Given the reigns by the coaching staff to make play calls at the line, Underhill tossed for four touchdowns. Three of those scores went to Jaeshawn Hughes, and the fourth went to DJ Keyes. The three touchdowns to Hughes came on consecutive drives, and the three touchdowns all occurred on the same play call.
After halftime, DJ Thompson was tapped as the signal-caller for the duration of this game. He continued the offensive roll, as the Patriots would score twice more. Thompson showed his dual-threat capabilities with a rushing and passing score. His touchdown toss was in the direction of Khi Garcia.
The size, speed and strength advantage for Grand Valley Christian was evident in this game, as the defense pitched a shutout. They continued their streak of forcing turnovers, as the Patriots collected four interceptions. Keveon Beal led the way with 2 interceptions, while DJ Keyes and Khi Garcia each hauled in one.
With this victory, Grand Valley Christian has now won three consecutive games, moving their record to 3-1. Next week, they will hit the road again, as they square off with Calumet Christian.
