The Grand Haven Bucs and Reeths-Puffer Rockets played in each of the six seasons prior to 2020, a great local series for both schools. After a one-year COVID hiatus, the series resumed on Thursday night. Grand Haven was able to secure their sixth win in seven tries against the Rockets, earning a 16-8 victory.
In the first quarter, Owen Worthington got things started for the Bucs. The quarterback kept the football and maneuvered his way through the defense for an 8-yard touchdown. Worthington added a conversion run to push their lead to eight points.
Owen Worthington again was the culprit offensively in the second quarter, as he created havoc with his legs once more. His 5-yard quarterback keeper extended the Bucs lead. He would convert the two-point try as well, giving Grand Haven a 16-0 halftime lead.
After a scoreless third quarter, Puffer finally got on the board in the fourth. Jaren Vandenberg was able to slip through the defense, and after a conversion, it was an eight-point game.
Grand Haven missed a field goal with four minutes to play, leaving Puffer one last chance to even the score. They were unable to do so, and the Bucs escaped with a victory.
Owen Worthington was only 2/6 passing for 32 yards, but he added 11 carries for 72 yards and two scores. Ryan Francis led the Bucs with 117 yards rushing. Bashir Neely was the leading receiver for Grand Haven with 19 yards.
In Week 2, Grand Haven will travel to Traverse City West to take on the Titans. Reeths-Puffer will welcome St. Johns for their home opener.
