The holiday season can typically lead to less action on the schedule for girls basketball. The games that we did have this week were great, and they are recapped below.
Cornerstone Holiday Tournament–Gold Division
In the Gold Division, the Grand Rapids Christian Eagles took home the championship over Zeeland East.
The Chix got to the title game by taking down Forest Hills Eastern in a 38-24 contest. FHE got out to a first quarter lead of 8-4, but their sloppy play doomed them throughout this game. The Hawks committed 32 turnovers, and shot 5/31 from the floor, including 2/20 over the final three quarters of play. Zeeland East was 1/9 in the first quarter, but they ended up shooting 13/43 on the night. Audrey Dreyer led the Chix with 10 points, while Grace Doherty led FHE with 7.
Semifinal number two was a phenomenal game between GR Christian and Forest Hills Central. The Eagles won 69-65 despite trailing by eight at halftime. They were propelled by a stellar third quarter that saw them outscore the Rangers 18-9. Four Eagles finished in double figures, led by Evie Doezema with 17. Theryn Hallock led the Rangers with 27 points, while Zoe Lipke added 23 of her own.
In the consolation game, FHC dominated FHE 47-23. The Rangers had already defeated FHE by 30 early in this season, and this game was much of the same. The Hawks committed 45 turnovers, an astounding amount in a 32 minute game. Lipke led FHC with 15 points, while Hallock added 14.
Grand Rapids Christian won the championship game over Zeeland East 50-45. The Eagles were up by 17 points entering the final quarter before holding off a late surge by the Chix. Doezema led GRC once again with 17 points and Rory Pruis added 11. Audrey Dreyer was the leader with 12 points for Zeeland East.
Cornerstone Holiday Tournament–Blue Division
In the Blue Division, Forest Hills Northern and Rockford won their first round games to advance to the championship at 5:30 PM on Monday December 30. GR Catholic Central and Coldwater will square off at 4:00 Monday in the consolation game.
The Huskies held Catholic Central to just three points in the third quarter on the way to their 63-32 victory. Morgan Robertson led FHN with 20 points, while Faith Walker had eight points and eighteen rebounds. Katie Tate led GRCC with twelve points, and Rachel Mayfield added 10.
Rockford had an easy time with Coldwater in the second semifinal, winning 50-32. After the first quarter left the game tied at 7, the Rams used a strong effort over the next two quarters to carry them to victory. The fast-paced Rams offense shot 68 times, and they attacked the backboard with a 49-31 rebounding advantage. Rockford’s defense also forced 25 turnovers in this game. Megan McCauley led the way with 14 points for Rockford, while Carlee Crabtree led Coldwater with nine points.
