We have reached the thirteenth week of the high school football season. The trip to Ford Field is just four quarters away for sixteen teams across the state. Our Michigan Sports Radio team will be covering two games this Saturday in the state semifinals, previewed below:
DeWitt (10-2) vs Muskegon (12-0), Saturday 1:00 at East Kentwood High School
The Muskegon Big Reds are just one win away from their seventh trip to Ford Field in the last eight years. This years’ bunch may be one of the best of these teams, as they have stellar play on both sides of the football. Led by Ohio State commit Cameron Martinez, the Muskegon offense is averaging a remarkable 50.8 points per game. The defense may be even stronger, as they have allowed just 7.1 points per game.
Their opponent this week are the DeWitt Panthers, who are looking to return to Ford Field until 2013. They are riding a seven game winning streak, including an impressive 35-14 victory against the Edwardsburg Eddies in last week’s regional finals.
Grand Rapids Catholic Central (11-1) vs Unity Christian (9-3), Saturday 1:00 at Jenison High School
Two West Michigan teams face off in the Division 4 semifinals with a chance at earning the trip to Ford Field. The 11-1 Cougars are firing on all cylinders offensively, averaging 34.8 points per game, topping the thirty point mark in nine of their last ten games. Defensively, GRCC is allowing just 8.8 points per contest. They have pitched four shutouts this year, and they have only allowed more than twenty points in one game, their loss to Niles (IL) Notre Dame.
Unity Christian is the reigning Division 5 Champion, and they will hope to make a return trip to the finals. They have been playing fantastic football during the postseason, outscoring their opponents 144-37. This includes a remarkable 38-17 victory over Paw Paw in last week’s regional finals. This offense that is averaging 36.1 points per game will hope to crack the Cougars’ defense unlike any team has been able to this year.
