The Brighton Bulldogs hosted the Hudsonville Eagles in last night’s regional finals. A hot start by Brighton enabled them to win 35-20 and advance to their first semifinals since 2005.
In the first quarter, Brighton scored three early touchdowns. Star quarterback Colby Newburg started the scoring with a thirty six yard touchdown run. Their lead expanded to fourteen points when Nicholas Nemecek punched it in from a yard out. At the end of the quarter, Newburg found Luke Stanton for a big play touchdown. The seventy two yard pass made it 21-0 Brighton after the first quarter of play.
Hudsonville’s Brennan Hayes, who played in relief at quarterback after an injury, stepped up and brought the Eagles back into this contest. He threw a pair of touchdowns to get the Eagles within seven points as the fourth quarter began. Once again star senior quarterback Colby Newburg, who has carried Brighton all postseason, stepped up and scored a touchdown to push the lead out to fourteen points. A touchdown by Nicholas Nemecek put this game out of reach at 35-14.
Although the Eagles would score another touchdown, Hayes’ third passing score of the day, it would not be enough. Brighton now advances to the state semifinals next week, where they will face the winner of this afternoon’s game between West Bloomfield and Belleville.
