The Catholic Central Cougars have been a mainstay in the Division 4 Playoffs this decade, making the playoffs in every year and winning State Championships in 2010, 2016 and 2017. Their quest to wrap up the decade with a fourth title continued on Friday night when they took on Sparta in a district final rematch of OK Blue foes. This game was similar to the regular season battle, as Catholic Central were big winners by a 33-7 score.

In the first half, the offense was pretty slow on both sides. Catholic Central started the scoring with a twenty five yard field goal by Jack Barlow. They pushed the lead to 10-0 when quarterback Joey Silveri paired up with Drew Gommesen for a four yard touchdown. Sparta responded with a touchdown run of a yard by Jakel Davis. Another field goal by Barlow made it 13-7 as the teams went to halftime.

The second half saw Catholic Central score a trio of touchdowns to extend their lead and seal the victory. The first touchdown was another pass by Silveri, as he found Gommesen again for a fifty six yard score. Later in the half, Nick Hollern broke a sixty five yard touchdown to extend the lead to nineteen points. Finally, Silveri and Gommesen paired up for their third touchdown of the night. This thirty two yard pass made it 33-7.

This game was one sided statistically, as the Cougars outgained Sparta 433-122. Silveri finished the game completing thirteen of twenty one passes, racking up 207 yards and three touchdowns. Nick Hollern had eleven carries for 143 yards and one touchdown to lead the rushing attack. Gommesen was the star pass catcher in this one, hauling in six passes for 148 yards and three scores.

The Cougars will be in the regional finals next week, but their opponent is still to be determined. They will face the winner of the Cadillac (6-4) and Sault St. Marie (7-3) game that kicks off at 2:00 tomorrow afternoon. Though the Catholic Central Cougars will be the home team, the location and/or date of this game could be adjusted from the typical Friday night. This would be resulting from the distance that Cadillac/Sault St. Marie would have to travel to play in the contest.
