The Central Montcalm Hornets reached the playoffs this year for the first time since 2014. Their first round draw was the Portland Red Raiders, who entered this game with a 7-2 record. This was a tall task, and the offense was thwarted by the strong defense of Portland. As a result, Central Montcalm was unable to find the end zone in a 35-0 defeat.

Just seventeen seconds into the game, Portland set the tone for how this game would be. Gavin McGregor broke off a sixty five yard touchdown to give Portland the lead. Owen Russell would add to the lead before the first quarter ended with a one yard touchdown run to give the Red Raiders a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, it was another fast start for Portland. On the first play of the quarter, it was Russell once again. This time, his three yard score gave Portland a twenty one point lead. Before the half, Blake Meyers added to the margin. He plunged in from a yard out to give Portland a four score lead at the break.

Portland scored once again early in the third quarter. This thirty four yard run pushed the score to 35-0 and it started the running clock. This limited the possessions in the second half, and neither team would add any more points the rest of the way. Portland’s defense stifled the Hornets lethal rushing attack, holding star tailback Teague Donazzolo to a season low sixty two rushing yards. This left him fifteen yards short of the single season record for the school.

Portland advances to the district finals for the fifth straight year. They will host Lansing Catholic next week in the district finals. The Cougars advanced to the district finals by defeating Olivet tonight 28-21. In the regular season meeting this year, Portland narrowly defeated the Cougars 21-20, so the rematch should be a tremendous football game.
