The Rockford Rams are OK Red Champions. After entering Friday night in a tie with Grandville, they were able to pull away as undisputed champions of the league. This happened thanks in part to Caledonia’s upset of Grandville, but also due to the Rams’ great play on the defensive side of the ball in their 17-7 win.

East Kentwood started out strong when they needed just three plays to cover eighty yards of the field. A three yard run by Josh Ledesma put the Falcons up by seven points. Later in the quarter, Rockford was able to even the score. Chris Corey took to the air and found Eli Haddad and the pair scored a thirty six yard touchdown.

Early in the second quarter, Teagan Lenderink gave Rockford a three point lead when he kicked a thirty-nine yard field goal. This would be the only scoring on either side during the second and third quarter. With three and a half minutes to play, Corey passed to Brock Holwerda from nine yards out to give Rockford a ten point lead.

Defenses controlled this game on both sides. Rockford outgained East Kentwood, but they only got a total of 181 yards. The Falcons had fifty eight yards rushing and seventy seven yards passing in this game. The Rams were stellar on third-down defense, as they held the Falcons to zero conversions on ten tries. They also halted two fourth-down conversion attempts. Rockford’s defense forced two turnovers, an interception and a fumble. They also were able to convert on the pressure in East Kentwood’s backfield, sacking the quarterback seven different times.

The Rams will take their elite defense to the postseason, where they will hope to make a deep run. It appears that East Kentwood will qualify for the playoffs despite having just five victories. Snooze2You had these two teams projected to meet in the postseason in his latest predictions of the Division 1 bracket, but we will learn the specific postseason fates of both teams during Sunday night’s selection show.
