The Flushing Raiders entered Friday night with a 4-4 record in 2019. They would need to win their finale and get some help across the state to earn a third straight trip to the playoffs. This task loomed large as Swan Valley has been one of the best in Division 5 over the past decade. Fortunately for the Raiders, quarterback Nick Powers was able to lead the charge on their way to a huge 34-7 victory.

Swan Valley struck first in this contest early in the first quarter. Avery Goldensoph found Ethan Champney for a seventeen yard pass to put the Vikings ahead by seven just five mintues into this game. This would be their lone touchdown and the only breif period in which they held the lead. Less than two minutes later, Powers scored his first touchdown of the game from a yard out to even the score at seven after the first quarter.

In the final minute of the first half, Flushing found the end zone once again. Powers took to the air to find Devyn Henson for a seven yard pass to give the Raiders a seven point lead entering the locker room.

The third quarter saw more strong play from Powers and the Raiders’ offense. On their first drive, he went for the deep ball and found Joseph Jaruzel for a sixty four yard touchdown strike. Later in the quarter, he threw for his fourth total touchdown of the evening. He connected with Cole Dunstan for an eight yard touchdown to give Flushing a twenty point lead.

In the fourth quarter, the lone touchdown was scored by Donald Snyder. His forty two yard run put the Raiders’ lead far out of reach for the Swan Valley Vikings. The Raiders’ defense stepped up to the challenge in this game, holding an offense that averaged 34.4 points to their season low of seven. The Vikings had scored at least twenty points in all eight previous games this year.

With the win, Flushing presents an intriguing case for an at-large spot with a 5-4 overall record. Swan Valley knows that it will play a tenth game, as they reached the six-win plateau last Friday. Both of these teams will learn their fates and, if they qualify, their opponents on Sunday night’s selection show.
