On Friday night, the Grandville Bulldogs were looking to lock up a share of the OK Red title. They hit the road and took on the Fighting Scots of Caledonia, the only team standing in their way of accomplishing this goal. Unfortunately for Grandville, they could not overcome the turnovers and rushing attack of Caledonia, falling in defeat 56-35.
Grandville started the scoring on the very first drive of the game when Cam Terry broke off a sixty yard touchdown run to the end zone. This set the tone for a tremendous rushing game for both sides. Caledonia got two rushing touchdowns by star running back Carson Vanderhoff in the first quarter. He found the endzone from one and ten yards out. The second score was set up by an interception by Caledonia’s Jack Snider.
In the second quarter, the offenses exploded with points. First, it was Vanderhoff once again. He broke off a fifty-five touchdown to push the Caledonia lead to two scores. Grandville responded with a big play of their own as Marcel Love ran fifty-six yards for a score. The Bulldogs would tie the game at twenty one when Terry got another long touchdown run of eighty-one yards. With just over four minutes left in the half, Carson Vanderhoff got his fourth touchdown of the evening on a fifty-one yard spring through the Grandville defense. The score was even at twenty eight as the teams entered the locker room thanks to a forty-seven yard run by Marcel Love.
The third quarter saw Caledonia display its traditional wishbone offense that the team was known for over the past twenty years. They slowed the game down and ate up substantial amounts of clock. They were able to take the lead on a three yard run by Vanderhoff, his fifth touchdown of the game. Grandville got a quick response when Cam Terry broke a seventy-eight yard touchdown run on their first play for scrimmage. Caledonia’s senior quarterback Jax Kinninger gave the Scots the lead back entering the fourth quarter when he got a thirteen yard touchdown run to move the score to 42-35.
In the fourth quarter, the Fighting Scots’ defense stepped up to the task and sealed this victory. First, it was Marcus Joplin-Pinero, who intercepted a screen pass and ran it forty seven yards to the end zone. Later, it was Nick Fox who came up with a key interception for Caledonia. They sealed the deal offensively when Kinninger connected with Ryan Stanton for a twenty-four yard touchdown.
Carson Vanderhoff led the offense with 43 carries for 272 yards and five touchdowns. In tonight’s game, he eclipsed 1,700 yards on the season, the new single-season record for Caledonia. Jax Kinninger had a stellar last game under center for Caledonia, as he was a perfect seven for seven with 104 yards and one touchdown, in addition to racking up forty rushing yards and another score.
Scoring 56 puts this Caledonia team in rare air. They scored over fifty points in back to back games for the first time in school history. They join the 2003 team as the only two teams to have multiple fifty point games in a year. Unfortunately, their season is over with a 4-5 record. They will return many players next season and will hope to continue this momentum into next season, with aspirations of making the playoffs for the first time since 2014.
Grandville got a great game from Cam Terry who had 239 yards rushing and three touchdowns on just nine carries. Marcel Love also topped the century mark as he had 147 yards and two touchdowns on twelve carries. The loss causes them to slide to 7-2 on the season, and they will fall one game short of the OK Red championship. They do qualify for the Division 1 playoffs, and they will learn their opponent on Sunday, with a home game being more than likely.
