The Zeeland West Dux and Zeeland East Chix met once again in their annual crosstown showdown on Friday night. These two teams share a field, and they have also shared tremendous success since they split in 2005. The two teams have made the postseason 22 of the 28 possible opportunities entering this year, and they both find themselves with the chance to make the playoffs this fall. The running attack of Zeeland West, especially on fourth down, was pivotal to their 34-14 victory on Friday night.
In the first quarter, the Dux struck first. Carson Gulker and the offense faced a fourth and goal from the four yard line, when he carried the ball into the end zone. Evan Eding added a two-point conversion to give Zeeland West an 8-0 lead after the first twelve minutes.
In the second quarter, Zeeland West found themselves again with a fourth down and four inside the 10 yard line. This time, Terick DeJonge ran seven yards to the end zone for the score. This seven and a half minute, fourteen play drive gave the Dux a sixteen point lead. The Chix took to the air and quarterback Ethan Houghtaling found Cebastin Hunderman for a four yard touchdown. The Dux were able to respond before they went to the locker room when Gulker found Chase Peddie for a 24 yard touchdown. This score made it 22-8 Zeeland West at the break.
In the third quarter, Zeeland West’s rushing attack extended their lead. Fullback Wyatt Geurink capped off their opening drive with a five yard touchdown run. Four minutes later, Peddie broke off a 50 yard touchdown run to give the Dux a 34-8 advantage.
Zeeland East scored the lone touchdown in the fourth quarter with the game out of reach. Houghtaling scored his second touchdown of the night, this time from eight yards out. The failed two-point try left the score at 34-14.
Chase Peddie was the leading force of the offense for Zeeland West. He had 20 carries in this one, and he racked up 170 rushing yards and a touchdown. In the second half, he was the catalyst, racking up 120 of those rushing yards. He also used his hands to make an impact, as he hauled in two passes for 54 yards and a score.
With the win, Zeeland West moves to 7-1 overall. They will try and lock up a home playoff game with a victory next week. They take on Hamilton in their regular season finale. For Zeeland East, they have lost consecutive games for the first time since losing the final three of 2016. They are 5-3 on the year, meaning that they need one more win to clinch an automatic berth to the postseason. They will try to lock down a fifth straight trip to Week 10 when they face Unity Christian next week.
