The prophetic musical artist Prince once told everyone to “Party Like It’s 1999”. This 1982 hit could be as popular as ever in Central Montcalm on Friday night as the Hornets have won their first outright league title in twenty years with their victory on Friday night against Tri-County.
Tri-County jumped out to an early lead when Nick Braunschneider found Cam Friend for a ten yard touchdown pass. They would take this lead into the second quarter, when Adam Becker‘s twenty two yard field goal extended it to ten points. They would get their lead as big as seventeen points when Braunschneider and Friend once again paired up, this time for a twenty yard score.
Right before the half, Central Montcalm finally broke the scoring drought. Andrew Johnson plunged through the defense from a yard out and cut the halftime deficit to eleven at a 17-6 score. They continued to chip away on their first drive of the third quarter, as Johnson once again ran in a one yard touchdown. Once again, the point after was failed and the Hornets trailed by five points with a quarter to play.
Early in the fourth quarter, Johnson scored his third one yard touchdown of the game. This would prove to be the game-winner as neither team scored the final nine and a half minutes. The Hornets’ defense spearheaded the twenty unanswered points, as Cole Olsen recorded a pair of interceptions. Teague Donazzolo had another solid rushing game as he had 23 carries for 149 yards.
With the 20-17 victory, the Hornets are now 7-1 on the year. They have won the outright CSAA-Gold Championship, and they are in the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Their regular season wraps up next week in a non-conference game against Millington. The Vikings are officially eliminated from the postseason with their defeat, as they are now 3-5. Their season concludes next Friday against Holton.
