The Central Montcalm Hornets started this season with six straight victories, earning their first playoff berth since 2014. This week, they had a chance to take complete control of the CSAA-Gold when they took on perennial power Reed City. A 22-0 start by Reed City was ultimately too much for the Hornets to overcome, and as a result they would suffer the first defeat of 2019 in a 34-6 game.
Reed City started the scoring with an eight yard run by Payton Hansen just four minutes into the game. It would remain 8-0 until the four minute mark of the first half, when Hansen once again found the end zone, this time from seven yards out. Just a minute and a half later, Hansen found the end zone for a third time on a 61 yard run. This gave Reed City a 22-0 advantage. Central Montcalm would cut the deficit to sixteen entering the locker room after Fisher Hill took the ensuing kickoff 65 yards to the end zone for a score.
In the second half, it was more Reed City. They got a seventeen yard touchdown run from Auston Major to push the lead back to twenty six points. In the fourth quarter, Landon Tomaski broke a 31 yard run to give the Coyotes another score. This would be the final score in the 34-6 victory.
Reed City has now defeated Central Montcalm in each of the past nine years. They are hitting their stride with four straight victories to push their record to 5-2. Next week, they wrap up CSAA-Gold play with a game against Newaygo. Central Montcalm is 6-1 on the season. They will finish their conference slate against Tri-County next week.
