The Freeland Falcons are looking to make the playoffs for the twelfth straight year this fall. They took another step toward this goal on Friday night when they defeated Birch Run 28-14 for their fifth win of 2019.
In the first quarter, Freeland started the scoring with a 43 yard touchdown pass from Bryson Huckeby to Trey Morgan. This capped off a seven-play, 65 yard drive to give Freeland a 7-0 lead. Birch Run evened the score when Chase Gruno rushed in a touchdown from four yards out later in the first quarter.
Freeland took the lead in the second quarter when they scored a pair of touchdowns. The first touchdown happened when Huckeby threw to Alex Duley for a 21 yard touchdown. Later in the half, Huckeby tossed the ball to Jacob Kubinger for a 70 yard touchdown. This gave the Falcons a 21-7 halftime lead.
In a scoreless third quarter, both teams had twelve play drives that ultimately resulted in no scoring. Freeland finally got the scoring started in the fourth with a touchdown of their own. Easton Armstrong broke off a 27 yard run to push the Falcons’ lead to 21 points. Birch Run was able to score once more in this game. Jacen Torres ran 33 yards to the end zone for a Panthers’ touchdown.
Huckeby, the sophomore quarterback, was the star of the show for the Freeland offense. He was 11/17 for 271 yards and three touchdowns in this victory for the Falcons. The Freeland defense stepped up to the plate and stopped Birch Run’s offense six different times on fourth down conversion attempts. Freeland is now 5-1 on the year and 4-1 in the TVC-Central. Next week, they will take on Swan Valley in league play. Birch Run slides to 1-5 with the defeat. They will take on Bridgeport next Friday night.
