The Central Montcalm Hornets entered Friday night’s game just one win away from the postseason. Andrew Johnson‘s three rushing touchdowns were the key in this game, as they lifted Central Montcalm to victory, clinching their first playoff berth since 2014.
In the first quarter, Johnson got things started for the Central Montcalm offense. He ran three yards to the end zone for a touchdown to give the Hornets a 7-0 advantage. On the ensuing kickoff, Paris Alston ran 68 yards to the end zone for a touchdown to even the score at seven.
This game would remain tied as the game went to the second quarter. Teague Donazzolo gave Central Montcalm a lead before halftime when he ran 15 yards to the end zone. This put Central Montcalm ahead 13-7 as the teams entered the locker room.
Four minutes into the second half, Andrew Johnson expanded the lead with a two yard touchdown run. Koronte’ Lowery broke off a 50 yard touchdown run for Chippewa Hills near the end of the third quarter. This cut the lead to 19-14 as the teams entered the fourth quarter of play.
Andrew Johnson scored a two yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to put this game out of reach in Central Montcalm’s favor. Johnson only threw for 66 yards on six completions, but his biggest impact was the three rushing touchdowns. Donazzolo had 119 yards rushing in this victory, and he scored the one touchdown.
At 6-0, Central Montcalm has won the most games in any season since 2010. This is their longest winning streak since they won the first eight games of that 2010 season. Next week, the first place Hornets will try to stay unbeaten when they take on Reed City. Chippewa Hills slides to 2-4 on the season, and they will try to get themselves back in the win column next week against Big Rapids.
