The Greenfield Hustlin’ Hawks hit the road on Friday night to take on Shorewood/Messmer in the latest Woodland-East contest. The rushing attack of Shorewood/Messmer was too much for Greenfield to overcome in this one, as they fell 40-37.
Greenfield started the scoring with a two yard touchdown run by O’Marion Bartlett early in the first quarter. Shorewood/Messmer’s Jeremiah Thompson was able to cross the end zone on a 25 yard run to cut the score to 7-6. They took the lead before the first quarter ended when Thompson scored from two yards out to give Shorewood/Messmer a 12-7 advantage.
Thompson took to the air to start the scoring in the second quarter. He connected with Sam Campbell for a 47 yard pass to extend the lead to eleven. The ensuing kickoff return was fielded by Skyler Gill-Howard, who got some key blocks and sprung an 85 yard run to the end zone for a Greenfield touchdown. Thompson’s fourth touchdown of the half, a pass of 38 yards to Campbell, gave Shorewood/Messemer a 26-15 halftime lead.
Sam Campbell continued his strong game with his third touchdown of the evening to get things going in the third quarter. His run of eight yards, paired with a Gereron Foster two-point conversion, moved the lead to 19 points. Greenfield’s offense started to click in the quarter to trim the lead. Alex Boyko broke free for a 39 yard touchdown to get things rolling. On the ensuing possession, Chris Lopez caught the deep ball from Bartlett for a 53 yard touchdown. Boyko’s two-point conversion moved the score to 34-29 Shorewood/Messmer as the fourth quarter started.
Jeremiah Thompson scored a fifth touchdown of the game to get the scoring going in the fourth quarter when he ran 38 yards to the end zone. The Hustlin’ Hawks were able to respond on a Chris Lopez and O’Marion Bartlett connection for 43 yards. Boyko once again converted on the two-point try, to cut the lead to three points. Unfortunately for Greenfield, they were unable to get back in the end zone in the waning minutes of this game.
Shorewood/Messmer ran for 296 yards in this contest. Thompson was the leader with 24 carries for 137 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 89 yards passing for two more scores. Sam Campbell also had a fantastic night on the field, racking up 89 receiving yards, 67 rushing yards and three total touchdowns.
On the Greenfield side, O’Marion Bartlett threw for 170 yards and racked up three touchdowns. Alex Boyko also had a solid game with 116 yards for one touchdown and he also converted two two-point conversions. Chris Lopez was the leading pass catcher with 96 yards and two scores.
With the victory, Shorewood/Messmer moves to 1-5 on the season and 1-4 in Woodland-East play. Next week, they will hit the road to face Whitnall. For Greenfield, they slide to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in league play. They will travel to Cudahy for a pivotal league matchup next Friday.
