The Wayland Wildcats visited Memorial Field on Friday night. It would be Homecoming for the Pioneers. Although the kick off was moved up to 5pm from 7pm, the East Defense had no problem adjusting. The Offense didn’t seem to mind the early start either.
Wayland won the coin toss and decided to defer. That gave the Pioneers the ball to start the game. East would score 5 unanswered touchdowns in the first quarter. Meanwhile, the Wildcats struggled to move the ball in the first frame. Forced to punt 4 times and two turnovers (one pick and one 4 & out), resulted in a running clock in the first quarter.
Wayland would score on their first drive of the second quarter as a result of a 81 yard TD. QB Jr. Grant Chelsey would connect with WR Jr.
Timothy Wierckz cutting the lead to 35-6 as the 2 point conversion fell one yard short. East would answer on their next drive. They would find the end zone thanks to a 1 yard dive by RB Jr. Quinn Van Zee. The score would then be 42-6 and remain until the halftime break.
The game would be called before the two teams could finish warming up for the second half. The weather and the point differential would make the decision to call the game rather easy. Ironically, just after the announcement was made, lightning would appear which would have caused another delay and possible postponement.
East RB Sr. John Shelton had 3 touchdowns (14, 2, and 4 yards) and a 33 yard pitch and catch from QB Sr Robbie Stuursma to class mate TE Davis Jennings, as well as a 10 yard run by RB Jr. Nathan Milanowski.
East improved their record to 2-0 in the OK Gold and 3-2 overall. Next week they will play GR. South Christian at 5/3 Park. The Wayland Wildcats are now 0-3 in the OK Gold and 0-5 overall. Next week they will host the Hawks of Forest Hills Eastern.
