After a tough pair of non-conference games against Berrien Springs and Lansing Catholic, the West Catholic Falcons had to feel some relief as they began the familiar part of their schedule against OK Blue foes. They seemed dialed in early in this contest, as their big first half was enough to hold on to in a 23-13 win over Comstock Park.
West Catholic started the scoring with just under eight minutes to go in the first quarter on a twelve yard run by Spencer Zobro, as well as an extra point from Chris Curry. After a forced turnover early in the second quarter, Curry was able to extend the lead to ten on a 39 yard field goal. Before the half was done, Boston Wilson ran five yards to the end zone to give the Falcons a 17-0 lead entering the locker room.
Comstock Park was able to get the ball rolling in the second half as Cameron Martin ran 26 yards to give the Panthers their first touchdown of the night. On the ensuing kickoff, sophomore John Kirkbride made a huge impact in his varsity debut, taking it 85 yards to the end zone for his first career touchdown to push the lead to 23-7.
In the fourth quarter, Comstock Park was able to score on a 75 yard catch from Ramsey Brower. This closed the gap to ten points, but neither team would score in the final 3:42. Zobro was the man again for West Catholic tonight. He led the way with 139 yards rushing on 20 carries, in addition to a 12/18 passing night for 77 yards. On the Comstock Park side of things, Martin was the mainstay in the backfield. He ran 21 times and racked up 105 yards and a score. This game was sloppy on both sides, with five turnovers (four interceptions) occurring. Despite leading the way with three turnovers, West Catholic was able to outgain Comstock Park 330-201.
With the win, WC is now 1-2 on the year and 1-0 in the OK Blue. They will take a break from league action next week against Grand Rapids Christian. For Comstock Park, they fall to 1-2 on the season. They will continue league play next week against Allendale.
