The Catholic Central Cougars and Zeeland East Chix squared off in a battle of two of West Michigan’s best programs. This game was back and forth all night, before a huge fourth quarter led the Cougars to their second win of the season.

Midway through the first quarter, GRCC struck first when quarterback Joey Silveri took to the air and paired up with Drew Gommesen for the score. Zeeland East answered on a field goal by their kicker Paige Westra to move the score back to 7-3 after the first quarter of play.

In the second quarter, the lone touchdown was scored by Zeeland East’s Ethan Houghtaling. His one yard run, paired with Westra’s extra point, gave the Chix their first lead at 10-7. They would take this advantage into the locker room.

The teams exchanged touchdowns in the third quarter. First it was the Cougars, as Silveri and Jace Williams teamed up for a 50 yard touchdown pass. Then it was Zeeland East on the response just a few minutes later, when Houghtaling and Ryan Stockdale were able to deliver on a one-yard touchdown. This gave the Chix a 17-14 lead entering the 4th.

In the final quarter, it was all Catholic Central. They scored three unanswered touchdowns to take complete control of this game. Benjamin Dalrymple went to the air for the first score, as he found Gommesen for a 50 yarder. He then used his legs for a pair of touchdowns from three and 21 yards respectively.

With the win, Catholic Central improves to 2-1. They have completed the non-conference portion of their schedule, and they will begin OK Blue play against Sparta next week. Zeeland East is also 2-1 on the season, and they begin OK Green action next week against the Hawkeyes of Hamilton.
