The Hudsonville Eagles hit a speed bump in the season last week when Holt’s last-second two point conversion dealt them their first loss. This week, Hudsonville returned to their Week 1 form with a convincing 33-0 victory over OK Red foe Grand Haven.
After two unsuccessful drives to start, the Hudsonville defense was able to force a turnover and give the offense great field position. They needed just three plays before Davyon Lesure went 18 yards into the end zone. Another great defensive stand gave the Eagles the ball on the five-yard line to start the next drive. Two plays later, Bryce Ouding punched it in from three yards to give Hudsonvile a 13-0 advantage.
In the second quarter, Hudsonville continued to expand on their lead. After setting up the offense for success, the defense finally got in on the scoring themselves. Josh Hoekstra scooped up the loose fumble and took it 24 yards to the end zone. Three minutes later, it was the offense once more when Tyler Kelley ran in the touchdown from two yards out. Before the half ended, Brennan Hayes became the fifth Eagle to find the end zone in the first half when he ran 23 yards for the score. This gave us a 33-0 halftime advantage in favor of the Eagles.
Neither team scored in the second half, as the Hudsonville defense completed their first shutout since Week 3 of last year against this same Grand Haven team (41-0). The defense was a force to be reckoned with all night, creating five turnovers. Grand Haven was only able to run five plays or more on three of their fourteen drives in this contest.
With the win, 2-1 Hudsonville will look to improve on their league record next week against West Ottawa. Grand Haven, now at 1-2 on the season, has a very important contest next week against Caledonia.
