The Lansing Catholic Cougars played host to West Catholic on Friday night in a Week 2 battle. Last year, these two teams played a defensive battle that saw LC score 15 straight points en route to a 15-14 victory. This year, the offenses came to play, especially for the Cougars, as they scored 56 points in a win over the Falcons.

Zach Gillespie started the scoring for Lansing Catholic just over a minute into this game, as his two-yard run put the Cougars up seven. He would extend the lead to fourteen when he intercepted the ball in the end zone and returned it 105 yards to the house for a score. Before the first quarter ended, West Catholic was able to get on the board with a 32 yard pass from Spencer Zobro to Logan Thomas, bringing the score to 14-7 after the first twelve minutes.

The second quarter saw a pair of touchdowns, both scored by Zach Gillespie and the Cougars. On the first scoring drive, he punched it in from four yards out. Later in the quarter, he found the end zone for the fourth time with a four yard run. They would take this 28-7 lead into the locker room.

In the beginning of the third quarter, Zach Patin broke free for a 65 yard touchdown to get things going for West Catholic. Two minutes later, Alex Watters hauled in a 55 yard pass to answer for LC. He would catch another 47 yard touchdown to push the Cougars’ lead out further. The Falcons were able to strike on a 75 yard deep ball from Zobro to Thomas, which brought the deficit to 42-21.

The fourth quarter was much of the same, as the Cougars outscored West Catholic. Mitch Raphael scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter, on runs of 10 and 48 yards. West Catholic’s final touchdown of the night with 1:22 to play by Zach Patin brought the game to its final score of 56-28.

With the win, Lansing Catholic improves to 2-0. They will start CAAC-White play when they take on Eaton Rapids next week. West Catholic on the other hand, is now 0-2 on the season for the second straight year. They will begin OK Blue action next week against Comstock Park.
