The Holt Rams got the season off to a strong start with a win over the OK Red’s Caledonia last week. This week, they were going to take on the Hudsonville Eagles, who entered this game off a Week 1 win against a CAAC-Blue opponent in Grand Ledge. The latest showdown between the Rams and Eagles was a phenomenal night of football that ended up resulting in a 22-21 Holt victory after a last minute two-point conversion.

Scoring started for Holt in the first quarter when Logan VanEnkenvort, a Core Power Performance Player of the Week last week, ran through the Eagles’ defense for a 50 yard touchdown. The extra point by Jack Proebstle put the Rams ahead 7-0 after the first quarter of play.

The offenses picked things up in the second quarter. Hudsonville got on the board with a 24 yard field goal by Emanuel Dieppa. Holt would answer with a defensive touchdown as JoJo Martinez intercepted the ball and returned it 60 yards to the end zone. Dieppa’s second field goal of the quarter, from a remarkable 47 yards, brought Hudsonville within striking distance at 14-6 as the teams entered the locker room.

At the end of the third quarter, Hudsonville scored once more when Tyler Kelley ran it in from six yards out. This brought the Eagles within one at 14-13 as the teams entered the final frame of play.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Hudsonville took the lead. Trevor McEachern ran 18 yards to the end zone, and the two-point conversion put Hudsonville ahead 21-14. With one minute to play, Holt found the end zone one more when Zach O’Brien found Logan VanEnkenvort on a 18 yard pass. JoJo Martinez ran in the two-point conversion and Holt went ahead by the score of 22-21. They would hold this lead and win this ball game by one point.

Holt is now 2-0 on the season, and they will wrap up their non-conference season against Traverse City West next week. For Hudsonville, they are 1-1 on the year now and they start OK Red play against Grand Haven.
