The Greenfield Hustlin’ Hawks had started their season with a pair of very tough foes in Martin Luther and New Berlin Eisenhower, both resulting in tough defeats. In their first Woodland East game tonight against Milwaukee Lutheran, Greenfield was able to get off to a hot start and hold off a late charge to record a 26-20 victory, their first of 2019.
Matthew Fischer started things for Greenfield when he broke off a very impressive 73 yard run through the defense for the game’s first touchdown. He would add a second touchdown before the first quarter ended, that one from three yards out, to lift the Hustlin’ Hawks to a 14-0 lead. Fischer had a strong night tonight running the football, as he would finish with 130 yards and 2 touchdowns on just five carries.
The second quarter was a little slower in terms of scoring, but quarterback Chris Lopez got in on the action. He used his legs to score from 19 yards out, giving Greenfield a 20 point lead at the break. Lopez would finish with 66 yards and the one score on 13 carries in addition to a strong game passing, where he logged 141 yards.
Milwaukee Lutheran was able to draw back into this game as a result of some highlight reel plays from Jacob Salinas. The senior first recovered a fumble and was able to return it 48 yards to the end zone for the Red Knights first score of the evening. Later in the quarter, he used his offensive skills as he hauled in a pass from Danny Perdzock, and 70 yards later he was standing in the end zone. This moved the score to 20-14 with Greenfield in front as the final quarter began.
In the final frame, Lopez threw his second touchdown of the night when he connected with Joel Santa Maria on a 19 yard play. The failed PAT left this game at 26-14 with the Hustlin’ Hawks in front. Perdzock was able to lead another scoring drive, pairing up with Niles Williams for a 14 yard score, but the Red Knights were never able to get in front, ultimately falling 26-20.
With the win, the 1-2 Greenfield Hustlin’ Hawks (1-0 in Woodland East) will hit the road for the first time next week. They will travel to Brown Deer to take on the Falcons, who are 0-3 on the year. Milwaukee Lutheran drops to 1-2 on the season (0-1 Woodland-East), and they will be home next week against Shorewood/Messmer, who come in at 0-3.
