The Freeland Falcons had a remarkable Week 1 game when they defeated Marshall in double overtime. They started TVC-Central play on Friday night when they took on the Dukes of Essexville Garber, who were playing in their first league game since switching over from the TVC-East. It was a phenomenal game, but Freeland kept the Dukes from their first TVC-Central win in a 29-20 victory.

In the first quarter, Essexville Garber started the scoring with a 19 yard touchdown pass from Adam Shimel to Camden Fisher. The two-point conversion by Greg Christe gave the Dukes an 8-0 lead.

The second quarter saw three touchdowns that would put Freeland in front heading into the locker room. Bryson Huckeby punched it in from a yard out, and then Aiden West tossed the ball to Alex Duley to even the score at eight. Christe and the Dukes would respond immediately when he broke off an 80 yard touchdown to give Essexville Garber a 14-8 advantage. Before the half was over, Huckeby scored his second touchdown of the night when he threw the ball to Alex Duley from seven yards out. Jack Dreyer’s extra point would put the Falcons ahead 15-14.

In the third quarter, Freeland expanded their lead. After a key pitch from Huckeby to Jaden DeBeau, the Falcons were able to march down the field and score. DeBeau’s twelve yard touchdown gave the Falcons an eight point lead. In the fourth quarter, West found the end zone again on a two yard run. Dreyer’s extra point gave Freeland a 29-14 lead.

Although the Dukes would score once more, they were unable to make up the difference. They are now 1-1 on the season and they will try to get their first league win against Alma. Freeland was able to improve to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the TVC-Central. Next week, they continue league play against Standish Sterling. That game will be broadcast LIVE on Michigan Sports Radio next Friday night.
