The South Christian Sailors and Greenville Yellowjackets began their season on Thursday night at Byron Center High School. These two teams only played until the 7:19 mark in the third quarter, before mother nature decided that this game was over. At that point in the contest, five Sailor touchdowns gave South Christian a 35-0 lead that would have led to a running clock throughout the remainder of the second half.
In the first quarter, South Christian set the tone with a trio of touchdowns. The first scoring drive was capped off by an eight yard run from Daniel Possett and a Jeff Heerema extra point to put the Sailors up seven. Just thirty six seconds later, South Christian found the end zone again as Eli Smith was able to punch it in from two yards out. With just five seconds left in the first quarter, Possett again was able to cross the goal line, this time from a yard out to extend South Christian’s lead to 21-0.
Early in the second quarter, Possett struck again for his third touchdown of the game. His four-yard run, paired with a Heerema extra point, gave South Christian a 28-0 lead. They would hold this lead into the locker room.
On their opening drive of the second half, the Sailors once again were able to put seven points on the board. This time, they went to the air as Chase Bradman connected with Elliot Grashuis for a 25-yard touchdown to turn on the running clock with the 35-0 advantage. Unfortunately, the running clock only lasted two minutes before this one went into a weather delay. After a lengthy pause due to excessive lightning, the game was called at this point.
Statistically for Greenville, they struggled to move the ball on offense. Their most productive player on the night was quarterback Grant Thwaites, who was 5/10 for 17 yards passing, and he also added 40 yards rushing on 11 carries. Zane Bigelow was the leading receiver for Greenville with 12 yards on two catches.
For South Christian, Chase Bradman finished with an impressive stat line. He was 15/19 for 244 yards and a touchdown, and he also added 36 yards rushing on five carries. Daniel Possett found the end zone three times on eight carries, totaling 36 yards. The Sailors’ leading rusher was Eli SMith, who had 69 yards and a touchdown on ten carries. Evan Roedema led the way on the receiving end for South Christian with 86 yards on five catches.
Looking ahead to next week, South Christian will get their first home game against Reeths-Puffer. For Greenville, they will look to bounce back next week when they take on Allendale in what is also their home opening game at Legacy Field. That game, in addition to the other 7 Greenville games after that will be broadcast LIVE on Michigan Sports Radio.
