The MHSAA Girls Basketball Tournament began Monday night with teams all across our coverage area tipping off with hopes of making a run to Van Noord Arena for the State Championships. Scores of Monday’s games and a look ahead to Wednesday’s semifinal action:

 

Division 1 District 9 at Reeths-Puffer

Muskegon 52 Grand Haven 47

Reeths-Puffer 48 Mona Shores 36

The Big Reds got a huge upset victory over the Grand Haven Buccaneers. These were two of the best teams in the area, and they are a great example of why the playoffs should be seeded. This one was a back and forth affair that saw Grand Haven take a lead halfway through the fourth quarter. Muskegon closed on a 9-3 run to seal the victory.

Division 1 District 10 at Zeeland East

Zeeland East 40 Jenison 39

Two tremendous basketball games were played in Zeeland in the District 10 opening round. Hudsonville had a strong shooting night, as they were led by 17 points by Jaci Tubergen. They also got 13 points from Chloe Elliott in the win. Zeeland West was led by Kaylee Baker with 14 points. In the second game, Meg Morehouse hit the game winner for Zeeland East to carry the Chix to the next round.

Division 1 District 12 at Northview

SEMIFINALS: Cedar Springs vs Forest Hills Central 5:30, Northview vs Forest Hills Northern

Four OK White teams remain in the District 12 playoffs. In the first semifinal, FHC goes for the three-game sweep of Cedar Springs. The second semifinal is one of the best games in the area, with 19-1 Northview taking on 15-5 Forest Hills Northern. These two met in the regular season twice, and Northview’s two wins came by a combined 13 points.

 

Division 1 District 15 at St Johns

SEMIFINALS: Lansing Waverly vs St Johns 5:30, DeWitt vs Grand Ledge

There are four teams remaining in District 15, and three of them have at least twelve wins already. St Johns now sits at 12-9 after their win over Lowell, and they take on Waverly in the semifinals. In the other semifinal, DeWitt (19-2) will take on Grand Ledge (12-8) in a conference rematch that the Panthers already won twice this year.

 

Division 2 District 37 at Shepherd

Division 2 District 42 at Grant

The Broncos advance to the district semifinals with a 22 point win over the Tigers, in a game you could hear LIVE on MSR. Aubrey Bates and Sally Moore led the Broncos with 11 points each. Grant was led by Cecilia Male with nine points and Nicole Whan with seven.

Division 2 District 43 at Allendale

SEMIFINALS: Allendale vs Forest Hills Eastern 5:00, Grand Rapids Catholic Central vs West Catholic

 

Division 2 District 44 at Grand Rapids Christian

SEMIFINALS: Godwin Heights vs Kelloggsville 5:30, South Christian vs Grand Rapids Christian

The four best teams remain in the district at Grand Rapids Christian. The first semifinal is an OK Silver rematch between two teams that played a pair of close contests during the regular season, both Kelloggsville victories. The second semifinal is an OK Gold matchup that serves as the rubber match. Grand Rapids Christian won the first game, before South Christian won the second contest.

Division 2 District 48 at Otsego

SEMIFINALS: Parchment vs Plainwell 5:30, Middleville vs Comstock

The Middleville Trojans went on the road in their district opener and knocked off the host Bulldogs of Otsego. This was a big-time upset, as Otsego entered at 16-4 on the year. Next up for Middleville is Comstock, who had an equally as impressive 16-4 regular season. On the other side of the bracket, five-win Parchment takes on 13-6 Plainwell.

 

Division 3 District 74 at Saugatuck

SEMIFINALS: Fennville vs Covenant Christian 5:30, Calvin Christian vs Saugatuck

 

Division 3 District 75 at Pewamo-Westphalia

Pewamo-Westphalia 52 Ithaca 23

SEMIFINALS: Saranac vs Carson City-Crystal 5:30, Pewamo-Westphalia vs Northpointe Christian

There are three teams in District 75 remaining with at least 16 wins. The 17-3 Eagles of CCC take on Saranac in what has the makings of a lopsided opening semifinal. The nightcap will be fantastic as 20-1 Pewamo-Westphalia squares off against 16-4 Northpointe Christian.
