The Grand Rapids Christian Eagles boarded the team bus to Trenton for the MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase on Friday afternoon. Their opponent, Hancock High School, embarked on a nearly 600 mile journey from the Upper Peninsula for the contest. The distance from home appeared to be no factor, as Hancock scored the game’s first goal. The Eagles responded however with a dominant second period to take control ahead 2-1. Both teams would score a pair of goals in the final frame, and Grand Rapids Christian escaped with a 4-3 victory over the Bulldogs.
On Friday afternoon, three Eagles found their shots in the back of the net. Ashton Bol lit the lamp with his sixth goal of the season, extending his team-leading season point total to nineteen. Graham Kormash scored his team-leading twelfth goal of the season in this contest, and his sixteen points on the season are only second to Bol. The big man on the rink today however was Benjamin Bultema. He was extremely effective, scoring on two of his three shots on goal. These were Bultema’s fifth and sixth goals of the season, and he now has seven points on the season. His second goal was the game winner in the third period, as it gave the Eagles enough to win the contest.
It was another solid day in goal for Zack Dodson. In 51 minutes between the pipes, he stopped 18 of the 21 Bulldogs’ shots and earned his sixth win of the season. A major struggle today for the Eagles was controlling the faceoff. These two teams tied with 26 faceoff wins a piece, the lowest faceoff win percentage for the Eagles since the Hartland loss back in December (also 50% success).
With the victory, the Eagles now are back at an even 8-8-1 on the season. They will play their second game in the MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase in Trenton on Saturday at 12:00 PM when they take on Flint Powers Catholic. At 14-2-2, the Chargers are the #8 team in Division 3. There is only one common opponent between the two teams, and that was Grand Rapids Catholic Central. The Eagles lost their meeting 4-2, while the Chargers won 2-0.
