Live by the three or die by the three. Several coaches have uttered those words when referring to an outcome of a basketball game. Tonight, the Grand Rapids South Christian Sailors lived by the three.

The game began like any other OK-Gold conference matchup. Both teams trying to get the other to play their style of basketball. Neither would need to change their game plan until the third quarter began. Both teams were able to shoot, rebound, and avoid turnovers throughout most of the first half.

The score at the end of the first 8-minute quarter favored the Sailors by just 2 (17-15). Headed into the locker room coach Jeff Meengs (SC) would only have a 3-point advantage (30-27). The changes he would make were simple. He told his team, “If you’re open, shoot it”.

His boys responded in a large way. Seniors Peyton Vis and Connor Kok as well as JR Chase Bradman, would be more than happy to shoot and make a total of 8 second half 3-point baskets combined. Combine those 7 with the three 3’s by Kok and one that Sr. Luke Schrotenboer had made before the intermission, and the Sailors would finish the night having made 10 more 3-point baskets than the Hawks.

The Hawks Sr. Nicholas Stoll and Jr. Solomon White finished the night with one apiece. White, a 6’2” guard, would pace all scorers with 24, but was the only Forest Hills Eastern player in double digits. Adversely, the Sailors had 3 players reach the double figure plateau.

Free throws would also play a part in the final tally. FHE would finish 11-16 from the charity stripe while SC would shoot 2-3. The missed free throws alone would create a 4-point margin. Combine that with 10 more three-point shots made and the 15-point final score margin would be trimmed to 1. This leads me to believe the rematch scheduled for Feb 22nd may be quite a game.
